Belief change is the hardest thing to create in any culture – how is a coaching culture different?

This is an interesting question because at the heart of coaching is values and beliefs.  This is the same for a coaching culture.  You know what it’s like when beliefs become entrenched.  You hear people say:

“That’ll never work around here”

“This is the way we’ve always done it”

Peoples mindsets can often be describes as a iceberg. You can see the things that people do and hear the things they say but that is only the surface symptons of the culture. What lies below the surface is often much more significant.

To genuinely change the behaviours and culture of an organisation requires working on the elements that are unseen. Many training events work on the "seen" behaviours which in the case of personal development is often sufficient. But when we are talking about organisational cultural change often more is needed.

A coaching culture is different because it isn’t a new “initiative”.  It’s a continual set of experiences that creates motivation, self efficacy and a great climate of learning and self improvement.  When people believe that if they make mistakes the only comeback is development they become creative and confident – which inevitably leads to greater customer experiences and increased productivity.
