We will definitely have all had bad managers. We will probably all have had good managers. But only some us will have had truly excellent managers. So why is that? Are excellent managers specially gifted enlightened people that most of us can never aspire to emulate?

At Emerge, we don’t think so! We believe everyone can be an excellent manager. It’s just that some people have a longer journey to excellence to take than others. Some people have more energy and appetite for that journey and some can’t be bothered to get off their bums and do anything about it at all. But everyone can make progress if they want to.

Everyone has their own definition of what leadership excellence is. Every organisation has different expectations of their leaders and every leader has different expectations of themselves. Consequently we have as many versions of leadership programmes as we have clients. They are obviously similar but no two are the same. What we include and how we include it depends on the needs of the client and the people being developed.

We have worked with new managers in their very first supervisory role right up to senior executives of large multi-national companies. The first thing we always want to understand is what you as the client want any training to achieve. We will them “smooch” around trying to find out as much as possible about your organisation so we can create a development experience that matches perfectly with your company culture and the objectives you have set.

So when people say “Our managers aren’t good leaders” we say “No they’re not... not yet!”
