Many attempts to communicate are ruined by saying too much. – Robert Greenleaf

In these days of ever faster and complex means of communication with more information available to more people more often why is it that in nearly every staff survey “lack of communication” is somewhere near the top of any list of complaints. Have we forgotten how to communicate or did we never really know.

At Emerge we really believe in Steven Coveys assertion “Seek first to understand before you seek to be understood”. There are so many learned people who have understood the need to listen and listen well, to make sure you communicate what you want in the way you want.

As a trainer I know that the most tiring sort of courses to run are the ones where you have to give lots of feedback. It’s not the feedback itself that’s tiring, it’s the active listening to enable me to give the feedback that wears me out. Proof, I think, that most people don’t listen at all well in their day to day lives.

Then when you do try to make your point how easy it is to make a mess of it, to get cross wires, to upset and enrage and miss the point. Choosing your words, your tone and all the accompanying body language will all have an impact on how your message lands.

At Emerge we have some fantastic communicators who can help anyone develop their skills. Whether your a Neanderthal grunter or a poetic virtuoso we can help you assess your communication skills, introduce you to some new ideas and help you plan how to achieve your goals.
