Investing in graduate recruitment and development can be a big expense. Sadly it can be a big expense without much in the way of return because all too often graduates leave not long after the end of their graduate schemes. The company is annoyed by the loss of their investment and the gaps it leaves in their workforce. Very often the graduate is disgruntled because they feel they have wasted their time and that their expectations have not been met. Even the existing employees have cause to moan. They see these upstart grads coming in and getting a whole load of opportunities denied to them as established members of staff. Then to make matters worse the grads then swan off after wasting everyone’s time and effort. So it’s not a happy picture all round.

What We Can Do

At Emerge we can do pretty much what you want us to, to help your graduates make the successful transition from “Full Time Education” into “Full Time Careers”. We have:-

• Designed and run “Induction” programmes that help graduates understand the organisation they have joined, their place in it and what is expected of them  

• Run modular programmes that span the period that a graduate is on their “graduate scheme”. These modules can be completely bespoke to fit in with your scheme but we would usually expect to cover areas such as:- 

  • Taking personal responsibility for your development

  • Visioning and active planning for you career 

  • Developing assertiveness in the workplace

  • Increasing self-awareness 

  • Increasing personal impact

  • Developing workplace communication skills

  • Developing successful working relationships

  • Giving effective feedback to your manager

  • Increasing business awareness

  • Increasing company knowledge

  • Networking

For all the programmes we currently run we always have work that needs to be completed between the modules. For example on one programme the delegates research a question from the business. On their business awareness module they report back to the senior question setter and their peers on what they have discovered and recommendations they would make.

• Helped design mentoring schemes and then delivered the training for the mentors, so they can effectively perform their role.
• Delivered training to the delegates’ manager so they can effectively manage, develop and motivate the graduates they look after. We find that this is a crucial but sadly overlooked part of many graduate schemes. How the graduates are managed and developed on a day to day basis will obviously play a massive part in them deciding if the company is a good place to work and if their expectations are being met. Managers also need to give careful consideration to the “non-graduates” they manage and how they encourage and develop the relationship between the grads and the rest!
