TOP 10 TIPS FOR WOMEN

Over the last 5 years we have coached senior women and run women’s programmes around the world. This has resulted in our model Elev8te, the 8 Traits of Successful Women, our development programme RISE and our Empowered Women’s Development App.  At the end of each programme we collate impact statements and we will be sharing these alongside a series of tips for women.  If you would like to hear more tips then download our App now or contact us for details on the RISE programme.

Empowered Women – Tip number 1; Strengths Development

Identifying your strengths and working on them is more important than focusing on your development areas.  Often our employers are not aware of our strengths and therefore don’t offer projects or roles that really allow us to maximise them.  When you are in a position where you are fully utilizing your strengths, you feel in your “flow” and it is easy to excel.  If we get feedback about our weaknesses and spend a disproportionate time focusing on our weaknesses then we may never shine at work.  Why not ask some of your colleagues and friends what your strengths are and check whether you are fully utilizing them?  If not then prepare to have a discussion with your manager about how you could.

Impact Statement:

“I have so much more self-awareness and now I am so much more open and request regular feedback, not only from my superiors but colleagues and direct reports is making such a difference to my career. Knowing what my strengths are and thinking about what people said my strengths were has really helped with my confidence levels and my performance.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 2; Confidence and Self Esteem

Confidence is not something that we naturally have and it is not a constant – no one is a naturally confident person.  Confidence can vary in different situations and one of the mistakes we make is to judge other people as more confident than us.  What we need is strategies to manufacture confidence as and when we need it and a huge part of this is the way we speak to ourselves internally.  Most people will spend a good deal of the time before an important event thinking negatively – telling themselves how difficult they are going to find it, how nervous they are, how sure they are that they won’t be successful, and imagining everything that can go wrong in a situation; in other words creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.  When you realise the power of the brain to create the confidence you need and how to manufacture it, everything changes.

Impact Statement:

“I have more confidence to tackle situations head on rather that avoiding them or asking for advice. I have increased confidence and self-esteem, and recognition of my passion and this, along with better balance will make me a better person is impacting my approach at work”

Empowered Women – Tip number 3; Gravitas

For women, paying attention to gravitas is so important.  Some women have all the knowledge and experience they need for a promotion but are told they lack gravitas, which leaves them quite unsure of how they need to develop.  For many it is about vocal projection – often, without realising it they are coming across as quite “girly” so learning to move the centre of resonance to the front of the mouth, articulate clearly by pronouncing all consonants and adding more musicality to their voice they will get a far better hearing.  Add some strong posture and powerful non-verbal behaviour and suddenly they find that they get a much better hearing in meetings.

Impact Statement:

“I strive daily to increase my gravitas in all situations.  I carefully think about the words I use and how I express myself, my tone and my body language.  I take more care about my appearance and dress for the situation. I am also observing other people to model their gravitas.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 4; Audacious Articulation

To be successful you need to ensure that you are articulating in a way that gets you noticed.  Having the ability to express yourself in an Emotionally Intelligent way will ensure that you navigate any situation at work with ease and poise.  This means being able to say “no” or “modify the ask” when people are constantly adding to your workload.  Some women find it really difficult to say “no” to additional tasks which means that they become overloaded and stressed and therefore don’t deliver anything effectively.  Saying “no” to something doesn’t mean you are refusing the person; you are simply refusing a request.  The problem for many women is that they want to be liked or loved by everyone and they think that a refusal will mean that the person doesn’t like you.  Be bold and say it – and you will be surprised at how accepting people can be!

Impact Statement

“I now say what I mean and mean what I say! I have recognized how important it is to say ‘no’ and allow yourself to be who you want to be and do what you want to do.  Be bold be strong!  Don’t feel guilty putting tasks on hold to allow yourself ‘me time’.  I have finally lost the “disease to please!”

Empowered Women – Tip number 5; Networking and Visibility

Behind every successful woman is a great network! Many women groan at the idea of networking and particularly hate the idea of attending events.  Yet many businesses have been grown by networking alone and many promotions have happened through a well-developed network.  If you are not visible in the workplace and to your network then no matter how hard you work you will not get promoted. If you really don’t like attending events, one way of networking is to ensure that you use Linked In regularly, sharing positive comments, joining groups, being a valued contributor, giving and receiving endorsements.  You will be surprised how quickly you can grow your network.  Make sure that you have an excellent profile and a professional headshot and aim to spend 15 minutes per day reading and commenting.

Impact Statement:

“I now have confidence to present to different audiences and to raise my profile.  Accepting to attend events that I would normally decline by putting out of the comfort zone. Did my relationship map which has helped me to increase visibility and my profile by managing my stakeholders more effectively. Breaking through barriers, was the biggest take away for me, following on from the course I now have a network of people to turn to if I feel I need to talk.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 6; Managing Relationships

Underpinning everything we do is our ability to manage relationships and stakeholder management is a vital part of many jobs.  Women can be naturally quite good at managing relationships but it makes good sense to develop this strength to be a real competitive advantage. A true and heightened ability to read people and to be able to respond with a variety of styles and have flexibility will help you to rise above your counterparts.  Take time to develop your Emotional Intelligence, particularly your ability to listen and facilitate discussions so that your style is perceived positively and ensure that you are perceived positively. Being a strong woman does not mean you need to behave aggressively. Manage your emotions carefully so that you are not labelled as the “emotional” one!

Impact Statement:

“I definitely have greater development of my influencing skills and built a stronger rapport with my team and stakeholders, Conflict at work with poor performance has resulted in the right outcome for the business.  I have adapted my style considerably and find it much easier to pitch ideas and my ideas accepted.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 7; Career Resilience

Gone are the days of a career for life!  Nowadays careers are much more transient and with the current uncertain climate we need to be sure that we have a plan for the future and we are resilient enough to weather whatever is thrown at us. Sometimes we are so busy doing our job we don’t consider our career and it is critical to have a long-term plan so that we know where we are heading for in the future.  If we have a 10-year plan then we can work backwards to ensure that what we are doing now is going to get us to where we need to be – and work out what development and training you will need to get there.  Managers tell me that very few women come to them with a fully formed career plan – they wait for the manager to come to them to ask for development.  Organisations expect you to be in control of your own careers and if you don’t ask you don’t get!

Impact Statement:

“I have become excited about the future; I have a 10-year plan and I feel happier and more in control of my wellbeing. I also found the courage to discuss my career development plan with my manager and to look at promotion prospects”

Empowered Women – Tip number 8; Life Guidelines and Values

As we go through life our boundaries can become blurred, our friendship groups can extend in a way that we hadn’t planned and our family life can feel as if it is turning into disorganized chaos.  We can lose touch with what is important to us which means that we feel as if we are fumbling our way through – a life by accident rather than design. Sometimes we need to step back and remember what is important to us, get back in touch with our values and draw up some life guidelines so that we can have a framework to help us to remind ourselves about what is important.  Life guidelines can be around anything, our relationships, our work, our health and fitness, our career, our development and once they have been developed you can refer to them regularly to check if you are on track with them or whether any of your values are being violated.  It helps us to feel aligned and comfortable that we are living a full and fruitful life.

Impact Statement:

“I had never realised how important it was to truly understand your values and have some life guidelines. In time this will increase my success as I will achieve my goals. It was like a mental “spring-clean” – when you feel better about yourself mentally, the approach to work is more positive and brings an energy to the work place. I check my guidelines regularly to ensure I am living them.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 9; My Style as a Leader

Historically women have always struggled with their perception as they hit senior positions.  Research has shown that men in senior positions can be labelled as powerful whereas women might be labelled in a less positive sense i.e. dominant and bossy. This means that women have to work even harder to establish themselves as a leader with an authentic style that is balanced, warm but powerful.  To be a great leader you don’t need to be an extrovert, you just need to be able engage people so that they feel your strength and vision.  This is critical for women as they climb the career ladder and paying attention to your style, getting lots of useful feedback and constantly working to develop your style will ensure that you are perceived as positively powerful.

Impact Statement:

“I shared some experiences from the course with the team to help them develop their confidence and gravitas. I am experiencing improved business results as I have developed Managers more and addressed under performance effectively. I have also delegated more effectively and was tougher on the team which was needed.”

Empowered Women – Tip number 10; Pro-Active Prioritisation

Life is changing so fast but apparently it will never change as slowly as it has changed today!  Trying to keep up with everything in our life and balancing family and work life is a real challenge for women. Therefore, a top skill for women is the ability to prioritise.  Often, we are compelled to complete all the tasks on our to do list and don’t pay enough attention to living mindfully and focusing on what is really important. It is only sometimes when we have a life changing event that we get some perspective and recognize what is really important to us but as the saying goes, life is not a rehearsal and we should be living each day fully and finding the joy in it.  In order to do this we need to really focus on what is most important, outsource the less important and not dwell on trivialities

Impact Statement:

“I am much more in control of time management – I have a life and needs outside of work that are also a priority, so I ensure the work gets done but I set realistic expectations. I make time to exercise, and be selfish sometimes”
